All throughout the 2016-17 athletic season, the Armstrong State University athletic department will be celebrating the 50th anniversary of Pirate Athletics!
This page will be your landing for all the information and celebration as we bring you regular features delving back into the history of Armstrong State athletics, from the inception of the Pirates in 1967 through the current 2016-17 campaign. There is a lot to celebrate as Armstrong State has grown into one of the premier NCAA Division II athletic programs in the nation in that time.
It didn't always start that way. The Pirates began with just a handful of varsity sports when the Southside campus open and the school became a four-year institution. Armstrong State first competed in NAIA, then moved to NCAA Division II in the 1970s. The Pirates were a charter member of the Big South Conference and played in NCAA Division I for three seasons before moving back to Division II in the late 1980s and eventually finding a home as a charter member of the Peach Belt Conference in 1990. Armstrong State has been a proud member of DII and the PBC for the last 26 years.
Armstrong State University athletics will be producing an oral history of Pirate athletics throughout the year, talking to coaches, student-athletes and administrators who helped shape the department over the years. But we want YOU to be a part of it as well.
If you are a former student-athlete, coach or even just a fan of Pirate athletics, we want to hear from you about your experiences with the Pirates over the last 50 years.
You can do that by filling out this form online, or if you'd like to be a part of our video history, then just video yourself on your phone or tablet and share that file with us by contacting Director of Sports Communications Chad Jackson at Chad.Jackson@armstrong.edu or just posting it to our Twitter, Instragram or Facebook page!
Below we will keep a list of all the features we produce throughout the year as well so you can click back anytime and take a trip through the 50 Years of Pirate Athletics!
