Pirates Blast Georgia Southwestern, 14-1, On Sunday


SAVANNAH, Ga. - The Armstrong Atlantic State University baseball squad halted its four-game slide in a big way on Sunday, blasting Georgia Southwestern, 14-1, in the first game of a Peach Belt Conference series at Pirate Field.

The win moved the Pirates to 9-4 overall and 1-3 in the league, while Georgia Southwestern fell to 2-14 overall and 1-5 in the Peach Belt.

Armstrong put up three runs in the second inning thanks to three Hurricane errors. The Pirates then plated five runs in the fourth, highlighted by a two-RBI single from freshman R.J. Dennard, to build an 8-0 lead.

Georgia Southwestern picked up a run in the seventh on a solo home run by Randall Sheffield, and the Pirates responded with a run in the bottom of the seventh on an RBI single by junior Casey Maloney. Armstrong rounded out the day's scoring with a five-run eighth inning.

Sophomore Ethan Bader (4-1) notched the win for the Pirates, giving up nine hits and one run in seven innings of work, walking two while striking out seven. Trent Franzago (0-4) took the loss for the Hurricanes, giving up six hits and eight runs - five earned - in 3 2/3 innings of work, walking four while striking out five.

Dennard finished the game 4-for-5 with three runs scored and three RBIs to lead the Pirates at the plate, while Maloney went 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs and a stolen base.

Michael Coffey went 4-for-5 to lead the Hurricanes at the plate.

The two teams will wrap up their three-game Peach Belt series with an 11:00 a.m. doubleheader on Monday at Pirate Field.
