Pirates Place Three On PBC Baseball All-Academic Team

SAVANNAH, Ga. - The No. 9-ranked Armstrong Atlantic State University baseball squad placed three players on the 2012 Peach Belt Conference's All-Academic Team, released today by league officials. Junior second baseman Mike Barnhill, sophomore catcher Clayton Miller and sophomore outfielder Cody Powell each earned PBC All-Academic Team honors for the first time in their careers.
Barnhill carries a 3.47 GPA in liberal studies. The junior second baseman was a member of the PBC's Presidential Honor Roll a season ago and this season, the Lake Forest, Calif., native is hitting .261 with eight doubles and 26 RBIs while fielding .973 as a part of the Pirates' nationally-ranked seventh defense.
Miller, meanwhile, carries a 3.36 GPA in rehabiliation sciences and this year earned Peach Belt Conference Player of the Week honors on February 14th. The Augusta, Ga., native is hitting .295 with one home run and 25 RBIs in his second season with the Pirates.
Powell carries a 3.34 GPA in biology and ranks fourth in the Peach Belt Conference in slugging percentage this season at .575. The Locust Grove, Ga., native is hitting .340 with 14 doubles, six home runs and 45 RBIs in 2012 in a breakout season for the sophomore.

The Pirates wrap up the 2012 regular season by hosting Erskine on Friday, May 4, at 3:30 p.m. at Pirate Field. Armstrong will begin action in the 2012 PBC Championships as the top seed from the East Division, facing North Georgia on Wednesday, May 9, at 12:30 p.m. at Golden Park in Columbus, Ga.
