SAVANNAH, Ga. - The Armstrong State University baseball squad picked up an 8-1 win over visiting Morehouse College in its home opener of the 2017 season on Wednesday at Pirate Field.
The Pirates evened their record at 2-2 after the win, while Morehouse falls to 2-5. Armstrong State returns to action on Saturday, hosting Paine College in a 1:00 p.m. non-conference contest at Pirate Field.
Armstrong State put up a pair of runs in the first inning to take a 2-0 lead. Senior Ryan Patterson drove in a run with an RBI groundout and frehsman Mark Felton drove in a run with a single back to the pitcher.
Morehouse cut the lead in half with a single run in the fourth inning as Percy Walters was hit by a pitch, Austin Jeter followed with a dobule down the left field line, then Zachary Lowe drove in Walters with a groundout to short.
The score remained 2-1 until the late innings. The Pirates plated one run in the sixth on a passed ball, then also plated a run in the seventh on an error. Armstrong State then put the game out of reach with four runs in the eighth inning, highlighted by RBI doubles from Patterson and junior Mike Warren.
Senior Aaron Bentley (1-0) picked up the win in his first start of the season, hurling seven innings of two-hit, one-run ball, walking one while striking out nine. Daron Bowling (1-2) took the loss for the Maroon Tigers, giving up eight hits and five runs - two earned - in seven innings of work, walking four while striking out two.
Patterson finished the day 3-for-5 with a pair of doubles and two RBI to pace the 11-hit Pirate attack. Warren went 2-for-5 with a double and two runs scored, while freshman Trey Polewski went 2-for-3.
