SAVANNAH, Ga. - The Belmont Abbey College baseball team picked up a 7-3 non-conference victory over host Armstrong State University on Tuesday afternoon at Pirate Field.
The Crusaders (26-15) swept the home-and-home series with the Pirates (16-21) after winning an earlier matchup, 17-10, in Belmont, N.C. Armstrong State will return to action on Friday, traveling to Georgia Southwestern for a 6:00 p.m. Peach Belt Conference contest in Americus.
Each team plated a run in the first inning as Belmont Abbey scored on a fielder's choice by Colin Rosenbaum and the Pirates plated a run on Will Browning's RBI walk.
Armstrong State took a 2-1 lead on Mike Warren's RBI fielder's choice in the second, but Belmont Abbey tied it back up in the third on Matt McGarry's sacrifice fly.
The Crusaders took the lead for good with a three-run fifth inning, then after a Chandler Corley fielder's choice RBI made the score 5-3, Belmont Abbey capped the scoring with two in the seventh on a wild pitch and an RBI single by McGarry.
Griffin Baker (2-0) gave up just one hit and two runs in five innings to earn the win for the Crusaders, walking four while striking out six. Blake Turner (1-2) took the loss for the Pirates, giving up three hits and three runs - two earned - in four-plus innings, walking five while striking out four.
Tray Roberts led the Pirates at the plate with two hits and two runs scored, while Josh Genthe's three hits and McGarry's three RBI led Belmont Abbey.
