Doubles Doom No. 1 Pirates In 5-4 Loss At No. 2 VSU

VALDOSTA, Ga. - The No. 2-ranked Valdosta State men's tennis squad swept all three doubles matches and held on for a 5-4 victory over top-ranked Armstrong Atlantic State on Saturday afternoon at the VSU Tennis Courts.
The win by the Blazers (15-1) halted the 46-match win streak by the Pirates (23-1) that dated back to Feb. 24, 2009. It also ensures that no DII men's team will go undefeated in 2010 as AASU was the last undefeated squad left before Saturday's match.
Valdosta State's sweep of the three doubles matches were all close affairs. The No. 8-ranked duo of Philip Pakebusch and Michael Kuech earned an 8-6 win over top-ranked Rafael Array and Mikk Irdoja at No. 1 doubles. AASU's Matus Mydla and Daniel Regan lead early against No. 19 Daniel Dueren and Christian Hansen, 4-1, and also enjoyed a 6-4 lead in the tiebreaker, but the VSU duo scored the final four points to earn a 9-8 (10-6) win at No. 2 doubles. Otto Lenhart and Frank Sickman completed the doubles sweep with an 8-6 win over Eudaldo Bonet and Paul Fitzgerald at No. 3 doubles.
In singles play, 37th-ranked Mydla earned the first point for the Pirates with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Lenhart at No. 4 singles - the only singles match to finish in straight sets on the day. Third-ranked Pakebusch knocked off 11th-ranked Bonet, 3-6, 6-3, 6-1, at No. 1 singles, then 25th-ranked Hansen clinched the match for the Blazers with a 6-4, 2-6, 6-2 win over seventh-ranked Array at No. 3 singles.
The Pirates claimed the rest of the singles matches for the final 5-4 margin. Sixth-ranked Irdoja knocked off No. 2-ranked Dueren, 3-6, 6-3, 6-1, at No. 2 singles, then Regan notched a 1-6, 6-3, (13-11) win over Konstantin Kutschenko at No. 5 singles and Paul Fitzgerald claimed a 7-6 (5), 4-6, (12-10) win over Kuech at No. 6 singles.
AASU will play its final match of the 2010 regular season on Monday, April 12, against No. 13 Francis Marion at 2:00 p.m. in Florence, S.C.
