Pirates Perfect After First Day Of ITA Southeast Regional


SUMTER, S.C. - The Armstrong Atlantic State University men's tennis squad opened up its fall campaign with a perfect showing at the first day of the ITA Southeast Regional on Friday at the Palmetto Tennis Center in Sumter, S.C.

The Pirates won all five first-round singles matches and both first-round doubles matches, advancing to Saturday's second-round action.

No. 2-seeded Matus Mydla defeated Francis Marion's Tim Ruepke, 6-1, 6-0, in his first singles match, while No. 9-16 seed Daniel Regan beat Limestone's Rafael Ferla, 6-0, 6-1, and No. 9-16 Pedro Scocuglia downed Columbus State's Danilo Sardelli, 6-4, 6-2.

Newcomer Sven Lalic blanked Queens' Gustvao Munhoz, 6-0, 6-0, while fellow newcomer Jean-Michel Blouin beat Wingate's Diego Martinez, 6-1, 6-0.

In doubles action, the No. 4-seeded duo of Mydla and Scocuglia topped Queens' Joshua Bloch and Chris Kennedy, 8-2, while the unseeded duo of Lalic and Regan beat Coker's Manel Estruga and Leonardo Lima, 8-4.

Play resumes on Saturday at 10:00 a.m. with singles play and continues through Monday. The winner of each of the singles and doubles draw advances to the ITA Small College National Championships in Mobile, Ala., on Oct. 13-16.
