SUMTER, S.C. - Armstrong Atlantic State University junior Matus Mydla and sophomore Pedro Scocuglia captured the ITA Southeast Region doubles title on Monday, knocking off Columbus State's Martin Shiskhov and Olivier Simonet, 8-5, in the region championship match at the Palmetto Tennis Center in Sumter, S.C.
The pair advanced to the final after Anderson's duo of Abdoulaye Camara and Daniel Gonzales retired with the Pirates leading, 7-3, on Sunday. Mydla and Scocuglia led the Cougars' duo, 5-2, but Shishkov and Simonet fought back to tie up the match at 5-all. The Pirates then won three straight games to claim the doubles title.
Mydla and Scocuglia will now advance to the ITA Small College Championships on Oct. 13-16 in Mobile, Ala. The duo are the second straight Armstrong pair to capture the region title, following Rafael Array and Mikk Irdoja's region title in 2010. Array and Irdoja went on to capture the DII and "Super Bowl" doubles title last year, advancing to the ITA National Indoor Championships.
In other action at the ITA Southeast Regional on Monday, freshman Jean-Michel Blouin dropped a 7-6 (5), 7-5 decision to Queens (NC) No. 3 seed Christiaan Lee-Daigle in the singles semifinals.
