SUMTER, S.C. - The Armstrong Atlantic State University men's tennis duo of senior Dan Regan and senior Georgi Rumenov captured the ITA Southeast Region doubles championship by winning twice on Monday at the Palmetto Tennis Center in Sumter, S.C.
The second-seeded duo won Monday morning's semifinal match over Cabellos and Guimares of Augusta State, 8-1, to move into the final, where they faced teammates and third-seeded Sven Lalic and Pedro Scocuglia, who beat Divljak and Reyniere of Columbus State, 8-5, in the other semifinal.
Regan and Rumenov completed the championship by winning the last three games of a 5-5 match for an 8-5 victory, earning a berth in the ITA Small College National Championships in October.
The pair are the third straight Armstrong duo to capture the ITA Southeast Region title, following in the footsteps of Scocuglia and Matus Mydla, who won the 2011 region title, and Rafael Array and Mikk Irdoja, who captured not only the region title in 2010 but the DII and "Super Bowl" title that year as well.
Rumenov will now attempt to add a singles crown to his resume on Tuesday at 2:00 p.m. when he meets teammate Mydla for the ITA Southeast Region title at the Armstrong Tennis Complex.
