SAVANNAH, Ga. - Armstrong Atlantic State University senior Georgi Rumenov captured the ITA Southeast Region singles title with a 6-1, 6-4 win over teammate Matus Mydla on Tuesday afternoon at the Armstrong Tennis Complex.
The top seed in the main singles draw, Rumenov will represent the Pirates in the ITA Small College National Championships in Mobile, Ala., on Oct. 11-14 in singles as well as doubles as the senior captured the doubles title yesterday with teammate Dan Regan.
Mydla, the second seed, appeared in the final after advancing to the Round of 16 a season ago and the quarterfinals in 2010.
Rumenov is the fifth Armstrong men's tennis player to capture the ITA Southeast Region crown out of the last six seasons, joining Eudaldo Bonet (2008, 2010), Rafael Array (2009) and Robert Jendelund (2007). Bonet won the DII men's singles title in 2008 and Rumenov will look to join him and Christian Witt (1998) as ITA DII men's singles titlists.
Rumenov is in his second season of action with the Pirates and finished his first season in 2011-12 as an ITA Collegiate All-Star, the ITA's National "Player To Watch" as well as the No. 1-ranked singles and doubles player in the nation.
