ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. - The No. 5-ranked Armstrong Atlantic State University men's tennis team outlasted a lengthy weather delay and No. 19-ranked NYIT, 5-1, in the NCAA Round of 16 on Tuesday evening at Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs, Fla.
The Pirates advance to the NCAA Quarterfinals, where they will face the winner of No. 30 Northwood (Mich.) and No. 18 Northwest Missouri State at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday. NYIT sees its season come to an end for the second straight year in the round of 16, finishing with a 17-5 record.
Armstrong won two of three doubles to take a key 2-1 lead heading into singles play. The No. 7-ranked doubles duo of Jaan Kononov and Pedro Scocuglia defeated the No. 20-ranked Julio Pulido and Matej Selecky, 8-3, at No. 1 singles, while Luca Cerin and Pablo Gor downed Nicolas Heintz and Nico Jubera, 8-2, at No. 3 doubles. NYIT picked up a doubles wins at No. 2 doubles as Nicolas Auruccio and Francisco Aparicio defeated Ignacio Hernandez and Damian Okrutny, 8-3.
In singles, No. 21-ranked Gor picked up a quick 6-0, 6-1 win over Heintz at No. 4 singles to put the Pirates up, 3-1. No. 20-ranked Kononov fought off an early 4-1 first-set deficit to upend No. 47-ranked Julio Pulido, 7-5, 6-0, at No. 2 singles, then Cerin finished off the Bears with a 6-3, 1-6, 6-3 win over Rafal Charkiewicz at No. 5 singles.
