SAVANNAH, Ga. - Armstrong State University sophomore Alberto Caceres Casas has been named the Peach Belt Conference's men's tennis Player of the Week, announced today by league officials.
Caceres Casas went 2-0 in both singles and doubles play in key PBC matches last week. The sophomore from Madrid, Spain, swept Young Harris' Daniel Tiboldi 6-0, 6-2 and then knocked off #35 David Korsten of Lander 6-4, 6-7 (1), 6-1. That win was key in the 5-4 victory for the Pirates over the fifth-ranked Bearcats and one of the two points he contributed in that match. Caceres Casas and partner Jan Porteset beat the Lander team of Marc Hofer and Omar El-Moslemany 8-1. The duo also beat the YHC team of Pavel and Quevedo 8-4.
The two singles wins bring his spring record to 11-3 with two wins over nationally-ranked opponents. This is the first PBC weekly honor for Caceres Casas this season and the second of his career - he was named the PBC Player of the Week on April 12th of his freshman season.
Caceres Casas and the Pirates return to action on Friday, hosting Auburn-Montgomery at 1:00 p.m. at the Armstrong Tennis Complex.
