SAVANNAH, Ga. - The Auburn Montgomery men's tennis team picked up a 5-3 win over No. 4 Armstrong State University on Friday afternoon at the Armstrong Tennis Complex.
The Warhawks improved to 13-6 overall with the win, while Armstrong State fell to 15-6 overall. The Pirates wrap up the 2017 regular season on Saturday, hosting No. 13 North Georgia in a 2:00 p.m. Peach Belt Conference contest.
The Pirates would take a 2-1 lead on Auburn Montgomery following doubles play. The No. 6-ranked duo of Alberto Caceres Casas and Jan Porteset blanked Vincent Dubosclard and Birkir Gunnarsson, 8-0, at No. 1 doubles, while No. 19-ranked Luca Cerin and Ignacio Hernandez outlasted Matias Destefanis and Santiago Veglia, 9-8, at No. 3 doubles. AUM picked up an 8-4 win at No. 2 doubles from Francisco Mendieta and Alvaro Terron over Lorenzo Camilli and Bjorn Kurtze.
In singles play, the Warhawks would win four of six singles matches to take the match. Dubosclard downed No. 8-ranked Cerin, 7-6, 6-2, at No. 1 singles, while Destefanis beat No. 13-ranked Caceres Casas, 6-2, 2-6, 6-4, at No. 2 singles. Terron beat Porteset, 7-6, 6-3, at No. 4 singles and Gunnarsson downed Camilli, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 5 singles. The Pirates' lone singles point came at No. 6 singles as Alvaro Cruz Chomorro defeated Veglia, 6-2, 6-4, at No. 6 singles. With the match clinched, the No. 3 singles match between No. 48 Hernandez of the Pirates and Mendieta of AUM was halted with the score even at 7-6, 6-7, 1-1.
