PBC CHAMPS! No. 4 Men's Tennis Clinches PBC Title With 7-2 Win Over No. 13 North Georgia On Senior Day

SAVANNAH, Ga. - The No. 4-ranked Armstrong State University men's tennis team captured its eighth straight Peach Belt Conference regular season title with a 7-2 win over No. 13 North Georgia on Senior Day Saturday at the Armstrong Tennis Complex.

The Pirates (16-6, 9-1 PBC) share the regular season title with Columbus State, who defeated Lander, 6-3, on Saturday. Armstrong State's title is the eighth straight and the 12th out of the last 13 seasons for the Pirates. North Georgia falls to 18-3 overall and 7-3 in the PBC with the loss.

Armstrong State swept all three doubles matches from the Nighthawks for a commanding 3-0 lead heading into singles play. The No. 19-ranked duo of seniors Luca Cerin and Ignacio Hernandez oulasted No. 10-ranked Alexander Reinauer and Niklas Zielen, 9-8 (2), at No. 1 doubles, while the No. 6-ranked duo of Alberto Caceres Casas and Jan Porteset knocked off No. 22-ranked Andre Canino and Lukas Moritzen, 8-3, at No. 2 doubles. Alvaro Cruz Chomorro and Bjorn Kurtze finished the doubles sweep with an 8-5 win over Jared Bones and Mark Laishley.

The Pirates picked up two quick straight-set singles wins to clinch the victory over North Georgia and the regular season PBC crown. No. 48-ranked Hernandez beat Canino, 6-1, 6-0, at No. 3 singles, then Porteset downed Laishley, 6-2, 6-3, at No. 4 singles.

No. 31-ranked Zielen upset No. 8 Cerin, 6-2, 7-5, at No. 1 singles for the Nighthawks. The other three singles matches went to 10-point third-set tiebreakers. No. 13-ranked Caceres Casas downed No. 32-rnaked Reinauer, 7-6, 5-7, (10-3) at No. 2 singles for the Pirates, while Lorenzo Camilli downed Bones, 3-6, 6-4, (11-9) at No. 6 singles. North Georgia's Moritzen defeated Cruz Chomorro, 3-6, 7-5, (10-5) at No. 5 singles. 

Prior to the match, seniors Luca Cerin and Ignacio Hernandez were honored for their four-year careers as Pirates in a ceremony.

Armstrong State will be the No. 2 seed in the upcoming 2017 Peach Belt Conference Championships, which take place from April 21-23 at the Dr. Eddie Floyd Tennis Center in Florence, S.C. Full seedings will be released by the Peach Belt this weekend.
