Five Pirates Earn NFCA Softball All-Southeast Region Honors


SAVANNAH, Ga. - Five members of the No. 9-ranked Armstrong Atlantic State University softball squad earned All-Southeast Region honors from the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA), released today by the organization.

Senior second baseman April Jowers and junior outfielder Shelby Duff were named to the first team, while junior pitcher Megan Barnwell, senior outfielder Baillie Temples and senior designated player Heather Walker were each named to the second team.

Jowers led NCAA DII in batting this season, hitting .565 with 10 hits and 28 stolen bases. The two-time Peach Belt Conference Player of the Year finished her Pirate career as Armstrong's and the Peach Belt Conference's all-time hits leader.

Duff, meanwhile, put together another outstanding season in center field as she hit .416 with 14 doubles, six home runs and 30 RBIs. The first-team All-PBC selection ranked second in the league in hitting and led the league in doubles while also stealing 14 bases.

Both Jowers and Duff will advance to national balloting for possible All-America honors from the NFCA. Jowers was a first-team All-America honoree in 2011.

Barnwell earns her second NFCA All-Region honor for going 21-5 with a 2.15 ERA and earning Peach Belt Conference Pitcher of the Year honors. Temples hit .331 with eleven doubles a team-high nine home runs and 49 RBIs, while Walker enjoyed a careeer year, hitting .292 with four home runs and 34 RBIs.
