SAVANNAH, Ga. - The Armstrong State University softball squad is ranked second in the first NCAA Division II Regional Rankings, released today by the national committee.
The Pirates (29-10) come in at No. 2 with fellow Peach Belt school North Georgia (40-10) taking the top spot. Young Harris (40-10) is third, followed by Limestone (37-9), Lenoir-Rhyne (41-8), Pfeiffer (36-4), Carson-Newman (36-10) and Flagler (35-18). Georgia College (30-18) and Anderson (SC) (32-14) round out the Top 10 ranked teams.
The regional rankings are used by the selection committee to determine who will compete in the upcoming 2017 NCAA Division II Softball Championships. Eight teams will advance with three automatic bids going to the tournament champions of the Peach Belt Conference, South Atlantic Conference and Conference Carolinas. Five at-large berths will also be selected, with the announcement of participating teams being made on May 7th.
The top two teams will host a four-team sub-regional on May 11-13, with the winners of the two sub-regionals advancing to the highest remaining seed site for the NCAA DII Southeast Super Regional on May 18-19. The winner will then advance to the DII Championships in Salem, Va., on May 25-29.
The next NCAA DII Softball Region Rankings will be released on Wednesday, April 26th.
Armstrong State will be in action at the 2017 PBC Championships on Friday, facing Montevallo in an 11:00 a.m. first-round contest in Milledgeville.
