MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. - The second-seeded Armstrong State University softball squad advanced to the Peach Belt Conference tournament semifinals with a 9-4 win over seventh-seeded Montevallo on Friday at the Peeler Complex in Milledgeville, Ga.
The Pirates (30-10) advance to face third-seeded Flagler - 7-1 winners over sixth-seeded Columbus State - on Saturday at 10:00 a.m. Montevallo sees its season come to a close with a 23-23 record.
Montevallo looked prime to pull off the upset early as PBC Player of the Year Kelsey Vining staked the Falcons to a 3-0 lead with a first-inning three-run home run.
Armstrong State quickly erased that deficit, however, with four runs in the bottom of the first inning two on a two-run double by senior Jane Trzaska, and two on a two-run home run by junior Autumn Parrish.
The Pirates added three runs in the bottom of the second on a three-run shot by sophmore Logan Harrell that made the score 7-3.
The Falcons got a run in the top of the fourth when Hannah McCreless was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. With the bases still loaded with one out, Trzaska struck out Holly LaForce and got Dylan Bailey to line out to second to end the inning.
Back-to-back RBI doubles from Parrish and sophomore Macy Coleman stretched the Pirates' lead to 9-4 in the bottom of the fifth, capping the scoring.
The PBC's Pitcher of the Year, Trzaska improved to 14-5 with the win in the circle, giving up four hits and four runs - three earned - in seven innings of work, walking three while striking out three. Abbey Pratt (11-14) took the loss for the Falcons, giving up six hits and seven runs in 1 1/3 innings of work, walking one while striking out two.
Parrish and Harrell each went 2-for-3 with three RBIs for the Pirates at the plate, while freshman Natalie Corbin had two hits and two runs scored. Vining's 2-for-4 day with three RBIs led the Falcons.
