SAVANNAH, Ga. - Flagler College halted a 14-game losing streak by picking up a 71-61 Peach Belt Conference women's basketball victory over host Armstrong State University on Monday evening at Alumni Arena.
The Saints notched their first win since November, improving to 3-16 overall and 1-11 in the PBC, while the Pirates dropped their fourth straight in fallling to 7-14 overall and 3-9 in the PBC. Armstrong State returns to action on Wednesday, taking on Francis Marion University at 5:30 p.m. in Florence, S.C.
The Pirates opened up a 20-11 lead in the first quarter, but went nearly nine minutes without a point as Flagler took a 21-20 lead on Kierra Crane's jumper with 3:27 left in the half. Armstrong State retook the lead on a layup by junior Machala Raymonville and took a three-point lead into the break, 29-26.
Flagler, which did not shoot any free throws in the first half, took control of the game by going 18-of-20 from the line in the third quarter to take a 48-43 lead into the fourth. The Saints quickly stretched their lead to 10 two minutes into the fourth quarter and closed out their first league win.
Senior Jessica Doyle led all scorers for the Pirates with 24 points on 8-of-16 shooting from the floor, including 6-of-10 from three-point range, while Raymonville finished with 10 points.
Flagler placed four players in double figures, led by Bri Roberts' 23 points, Crane's 13 points and Tiffany Hodge's double-double of 12 points and 18 rebounds.
