No. 3 Pirates Clip No. 3 (NAIA) Embry-Riddle, 7-2


DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - The No. 3-ranked Armstrong Atlantic State University women's tennis team knocked off its third-ranked counterpart from NAIA, Embry-Riddle, by a 7-2 score on Thursday afternoon in Daytona Beach, Fla.

The Pirates remain unbeaten on the season, improving to 19-0 on the year, while Embry-Riddle falls to 17-3 on the campaign.

Armstrong captured two of three doubles matches to take a 2-1 lead heading into singles play. The No. 2-ranked duo of Aleksandra Filipovski and Barbora Krtickova defeated the No. 6-ranked NAIA duo of Yi Ching Chen and Josefine Strom, 9-8 (7-2), at No. 1 doubles, while the No. 15-ranked duo of Kathleen Henry and Clara Perez beat Kristina Marova and Giovanna Tomiotto, 8-5, at No. 3 doubles.

Embry-Riddle captured the No. 2 doubles match as Rocio Frej Vitalle and Ekaterina Kamendova beat No. 10-ranked Marlen Hacke and Olga Kalodzitsa, 8-2, at No. 2 doubles.

The Pirates then won five of six singles matches to clinch the match over the Eagles. No. 7-ranked Filipovski began singles play with a 6-3, 7-5 win over No. 10-ranked (NAIA) Frej Vitalle, 6-3, 7-5, but Embry-Riddle answered back as No. 15-ranked (NAIA) Kamendova beat No. 20-ranked Kalodzitsa, 6-2, 2-6, 6-0, at No. 3 doubles.

No. 24-ranked Hacke picked up a 6-1, 6-2 win over No. 43-ranked (NAIA) Strom at No. 5 singles, then No. 30-ranked Perez clinched the match with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Tomiotto at No. 6 singles.

No. 4-ranked Krtickova came down from a first-set loss to defeat No. 6-ranked (NAIA) Chen, 4-6, 6-3, 6-3, at No. 1 singles. No. 23-ranked Henry prevailed in a third-set 10-point tiebreaker at No. 4 singles, beating No. 29-ranked (NAIA) Marova, 2-6, 6-2, (10-6), to complete singles play.

Armstrong returns to action on Saturday, April 14, visiting Valdosta State for a 2:00 p.m. contest in its final match of the 2012 regular season.
