Top-Ranked Pirates Sweep Into Semifinals With 5-0 Win Over No. 7 Lynn

SURPRISE, Ariz. - The top-ranked and unbeaten Armstrong State University women's tennis team swept into the 2015 NCAA Division II Women's Tennis semifinals with a 5-0 win over No. 7 Lynn on Thursday afternoon at the Surprise Racquet & Tennis Complex in Surprise, Ariz.

Armstrong (31-0) moves into the semis for the 17th time in school history and will play for an NCAA-record 14th national championship berth when it faces upstart and No. 18-ranked Southwest Baptist, who beat No. 14 Midwestern State, 5-4, on Thursday to advance to its first NCAA semifinal in school history. Lynn finishes its season with a 20-5 record.

The Pirates won all three doubles matches to take a 3-0 lead heading into singles play. Top-ranked Lena Lutzeier and Clara Perez defeated Kim Przeszlowski and Rosalie Willig, 8-3, at No. 1 singles, while No. 20-ranked Nicole Fossa Huergo and Carolina Prats-Millan downed Carolina Cuevas and Alina Jane, 8-1, at No. 2 doubles. Alejandra Cisneros and Diana Stomlega finished off the sweep with an 8-5 win over Martina Gledacheva and Grace Mpassy at No. 3 doubles.

Armstrong then got a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 1 singles from No. 5-ranked Lutzeier over No. 28-ranked Willig, and a 6-0, 6-2 win by Fossa Huergo over Gledacheva at No. 4 singles.

The women's tennis semifinals will begin at 1:00 p.m. on Friday.
