SUMTER, S.C. - The two-time defending NCAA Division II naitonal champion Armstrong State University women's tennis team opened up action at the ITA Southeast Regionals on Friday with a perfect 6-0 mark in main draw singles and doubles action at the Palmetto Tennis Center in Sumter, S.C.
The Pirates won four singles and two doubles matches in main draw action on Friday. Leading the way in doubles play was the top-seeded duo of senior Diana Stomlega and junior Lena Lutzeier, who defeated the Columbus State duo of Beatriz Lopez and Olivia Tadijin, 8-3, in first-round action. The duo of freshmen Paula Boixader Roca and Tajtana Stoll blanked the Augusta duo of Marye Gobernate and Eva Miralies Miro, 8-0, in the first round as well.
Singles play saw top-seeded Lutzeier downed Georgia College's Jena Kelly, 6-3, 6-1, in the first round while No. 9-16 seed Stomlega beat Lenoir-Rhyne's Sara Kalkenova, 7-5, 6-0. Roca defeated Mount Olive's Julie Gonzalez, 6-1, 6-1, and Stoll upset No. 9-16 seeded Claudia de Andreis of Wingate, 6-2, 6-1.
Singels B draw action saw sophomore Alice Patch lose to Emmanuel's Pearlian Mary Cipriano, 6-4, 6-4, in the first round.
Play continues on Saturday with singles and doubles action. The winner of the main singles and dobules draws advance to the ITA Small College Championships on October 13-16 in Surprise, Ariz.
