SUMTER, S.C. - The Armstrong State University women's tennis team has three singles players and one doubles duo still alive after the second day of action in the ITA Southeast Regionals on Saturday in Sumter, S.C.
Armstrong State had three singles players advance to the main draw Round of 16, led by junior and top seed Lena Lutzeier, who defeated Clayton State's Kristiin Mets, 6-0, 6-3, on Saturday afternoon. She is joined in the Round of 16 by freshman Tajtana Stoll, who defeated Marta Gonzales of Queens (NC), 6-1, 6-4, as well as No. 9-16 seeded senior Diana Stomlega, who downed USC Aiken's Kayla Calvert, 6-1, 7-6 (3).
Play in the Round of 16 singles begins at 10:30 a.m. and there will be two rounds of singles action on Sunday.
In doubles play, the top-seeded duo of Lutzeier and Stomlega downed Alina Munteanu and Merel van Zutphen of Montevallo, 8-3, as well as the No. 5-8 seeded duo of Lizanne Jinkertz and Mary Jo Nanti of Flagler, 8-4, to advance to the semifinals. The pair will face third-seeded Beatriz Leon and Giorgia Vitale of Columbus State at 8 a.m. on Sunday.
In other doubles action the freshman duo of Stoll and Paula Boixader Roca fell to the second-seeded pair of Camila Tobar and Kirsa Utech of Columbus State, 8-2, in second-round action on Saturday morning.
