SUMTER, S.C. - The Armstrong State University women's tennis team has two singles players in the semifinals and one doubles team in the final of the ITA Southeast Regionals after Sunday's action at the Palmetto Tennis Center in Sumter, S.C.
The regional doubles title will be crowned first on Monday at 8:00 a.m. The top-seeded duo of junior Lena Lutzeier and senior Diana Stomlega outlasted No. 3-seeded Beatriz Leon and Giorgia Vitale of Columbus State, 9-8 (5), in the semifinals to reach the final. The pair will take on the second-seeded duo of Camila Tobar and Kirsa Utech in that final.
Singles action sees two Pirates represented in the semifinals after Sunday's play. Top-seeded Lutzeier beat Emmanuel's Fantine Botella, 6-1, 6-3, in the Round of 16 and teammate and freshman Tajtana Stoll, 6-1, 6-3, in the quarterfinals. Stoll advanced to the semifinals with a 7-5, 6-3 upset win over No. 5-8 seeded Olivia Nelms of Pfeiffer on Saturday. Lutzeier's semifinal opponent on Monday will be Beatriz Lopez of Columbus State, with that match taking place at 10:00 a.m.
The other semifinal features No. 9-16 seeded Stomlega, who beat No. 3-seeded Carlotta Nassi of Queens (NC), 6-2, 6-1, as well as No. 9-16 seeded Kathrin Waidner of North Georgia, 6-3, 1-6, 6-1. She will face No. 5-8 seeded Nadine Tusiama of USC Aiken at 10:00 a.m. on Monday.
The winners of the singles and doubles brackets of the ITA Southeast Regionals advance to the ITA Small College Championships in Surprise, Ariz., on October 13-16.
