SURPRISE, Ariz. - The Armstrong State University doubles duo of senior Diana Stomlega and junior Lena Lutzeier advanced to the DII Doubles final at the ITA Oracle Cup on Thursday at the Surprise Racquet & Tennis Complex in Surprise, Ariz.
The top-seeded duo won a pair of matches on Thursday to advance to the final. The pair defeated Hannah Petersen and Tyra Timm of St. Mary's (Texas), 6-2, 6-2, in the first round match in the morning. The Pirate duo then defeated Valeriia Efimenko and Molly Worden of Northeastern State, 6-4, 6-3, in the late afternoon.
The duo will face No. 2-seeded Rosalie Willig and Diana Bogoli of Lynn at 3:00 p.m. on Friday for the DII Doubles championship. Lutzeier and Stomlega are attempting to become the sixth duo in Armstrong State history to capture the DII Doubles title, following in the footsteps of Steffanie Loew & Tanja Hoetting (1992), Sanggeetha Vijayakumar & Regina Wieser (1993), Laura Nhavene & Hiskia van der Leij (1996), Alida Muller-Wehlau & Barbora Krtickova (2010) and Aleksandra Filipovski & Barbora Krtickova (2012).
In singles action, top-seeded Lutzeier lost to Hanna Volikova of Indianapolis, 6-1, 6-4, in first-round action. She is scheduled to face Jensyn Warren of Sonoma State in a consolation singles match at 10:30 a.m. on Friday.
The winners of the DII singles and doubles brackets will compete with the winners of the NCAA DIII, NAIA and Junior College brackets to capture the ITA Oracle Cup title. Winners of the ITA Oracle Cup earn a wildcard berth into the ITA National Indoor Championships in November.
