FLORENCE, S.C. - The top-ranked and two-time defending NCAA Division II national champion Armstrong State University women's tennis team blanked No. 18 Francis Marion, 9-0, on Saturday afternoon at the John Kassab Courts in Florence, S.C.
The win improves the Pirates to 6-1 overall and 2-0 in the PBC as Armstrong State wins its 149th straight Peach Belt regular season match, dating back to 2003. Francis Marion falls to 4-4 overall and 0-2 in the league with the loss. Armstrong State wraps up its weekend PBC road swing with a Noon match at No. 42 Augusta on Sunday.
Armstrong State swept all three doubles matches from the Patriots as No. 2-ranked Lena Lutzeier and Diana Stomlega beat No. 21-ranked Samantha Koelliker and Marie Krueger, 8-4, at No. 1 doubles. Paula Boixader Roca and Tatjana Stoll edged Eva Lieben and Anna Wintrich, 8-6, at No. 2 doubles, while Alice Patch and Tamri Chalaganidze downed Sofia Henning and Anilu Barraza Araiza, 8-4, at No. 3 doubles.
In singles, Armstrong State took all six matches in straight sets, beginning with No. 11-ranked Lutzeier's 6-0, 6-0 win over Koelliker at No. 1 singles. No. 30-ranked Stoll beat Lieben, 6-3, 6-0, at No. 2 singles, while No. 13-ranked Stomlega downed Henning, 6-0, 6-2, at No. 3 singles. Boixader Roca defeated 6-4, 6-1, at No. 4 singles and Patch beat Wintrich, 6-2, 6-4, at No. 5 singles. Chalaganidze finished off the singles sweep with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Theresa Hammerschlag at No. 6 singles.
