SAVANNAH, Ga. - The top-ranked and two-time defending NCAA Division II national champion Armstrong State University women's tennis team notched a 9-0 Peach Belt Conference victory over the visiting University of Montevallo on Sunday morning at the Armstrong Tennis Complex.
The win keeps the Pirates (10-1, 5-0 PBC) unbeaten in league play, while Montevallo suffers its second straight loss to fall to 9-2 overall and 1-2 in the league. Armstrong State will return to action on Tuesday, hosting No. 5 Hawaii Pacific at 2:00 p.m.
Armstrong State picked up wins in all three doubles matches on Sunday morning to build a 3-0 lead heading into singles play. The No. 2-ranked duo of Lena Lutzeier and Diana Stomlega blanked Alice Copland and Rayne Sinclair, 8-0, at No. 1 doubles, while Tamri Chalaganidze and Alice Patch defeated Julie Berg and Amanda Gautreaux, 8-2, at No. 2 doubles. Paula Boixader Roca and Tatjana Stoll finished off the doubles sweep with an 8-1 win over Emily Beatty and Allie Whitley at No. 3 doubles.
The Pirates then won all six singles matches in straight sets to complete the victory. No. 11-ranked Lutzeier beat MAlina Munteanu, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 1 singles, while No. 30-ranked Stoll downed Beatty, 6-4, 6-4, at No. 2 singles. Boixader Roca downed Berg, 6-1, 6-0, at No. 3 singles while No. 13-ranked Stomlega defeated Sinclair, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 4 singles. Chalaganidze kncoked off Gautreaux, 6-2, 6-4, at No. 5 singles and Patch picked up a 6-0, 6-0 win over Lauren Pero at No. 6 singles.
