SAVANNAH, Ga. - The No. 6-ranked Barry University women's tennis team remained unbeaten on the season with a 5-1 win over top-ranked and two-time defending national champion Armstrong State University on Friday afternoon at the Armstrong Tennis Complex.
The Bucs moved to 11-0 on the year with the win, while Armstrong State falls to 11-2 with the loss. The Pirates are next scheduled to take on Valdosta State at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, but expected severe weather in the Coastal Empire area may affect that match.
Barry took a quick 8-1 win at No. 2 doubles as Zuza Maciejewski and Dasha Salnikova defeated Tamri Chalaganidze and Alice Patch, then picked up an 8-5 win at No. 3 doubles with Isabel Rapisarda Calvo and Verana Schmid's 8-5 win over Paula Boixader Roca and Tatjana Stoll. The Pirates made the score 2-1 as No. 2-ranked Lena Lutzeier and Diana Stomlega claimed an 8-6 win over No. 9-ranked Sonja Larsen and Ana Pain at No. 1 doubles.
In singles play, the Bucs won three straight-set matches to clinch the match. Rapisarda Calvo knocked off Boixader Roca, 6-0, 6-2, at No. 2 singles, then No. 22-ranked Larsen bested No. 30-ranked Stoll, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 3 singles. Pain then defeated Chalaganidze, 6-1, 6-3, at No. 5 singles and all of the other singles matches were halted in progress.
