SAVANNAH, Ga. - The No. 4-ranked Armstrong State University women's tennis team picked up another Top 10 win by knocking off No. 8-ranked Flagler College, 7-2, in Peach Belt action on Saturday at the Armstrong Tennis Complex.
The Pirates improved to 16-3 overall and 8-1 in the league with the win, while Flagler fell to 13-3 overall and 6-2 in the PBC. The win was the sixth this season for the Pirates over a Top 10-ranked opponent. Armstrong State returns to action on Friday, hosting No. 36-ranked North Georgia at 2:00 p.m. in PBC action.
Armstrong State won two of three doubles matches to take a 2-1 edge heading into singles play. The duo of Lena Lutzeier and Paula Boixader Roca defeated Patrycja Maslanka and Mary Jo Nanti, 8-5, at No. 1 doubles, while Tamri Chalaganidze and Alice Patch beat Hilary hanton and Felicitas Runkel, 8-3, at No. 3 doubles. Flagler's Kelly Burge and Lizanne Jinkerts won five straight games to edge Tatjana Stoll and Diana Stomlega, 8-6, at No. 2 doubles.
In singles play, the Pirates won five of six singles matches, beginning with Chalaganidze's 6-0, 6-0 blanking of Hanton at No. 6 singles. Boixader Roca defeated Nanti, 6-4, 6-1, at No. 2 singles, while No. 5-ranked Lutzeier downed No. 39-ranked Jinkertz, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 1 singles. No. 22-ranked Stomlega beat Maslanka, 6-4, 6-2, at No. 4 singles and Patch won a 10-point third-set tiebreaker to defeat Runkel, 5-7, 6-2, (10-5). Flagler's singles point came at No. 3 singles as Burge upset No. 17-ranked Stoll, 6-1, 6-3.
