SAVANNAH, Ga. - The No. 4-ranked Armstrong State University women's tennis team notched a 9-0 Peach Belt Conference victory over visiting Lander University on Sunday at the Armstrong Tennis Complex.
The Pirates improved to 18-3 overall and 10-1 in the PBC with the win, while Lander falls to 9-8 overall and 4-7 in the league with the loss. Armstrong State returns to action on Friday, hosting Auburn Montgomery in a 1:00 p.m. non-conference match.
Armstrong State picked up wins in all three doubles matches for the quick 3-0 lead. Lena Lutzeier and Paula Boixader Roca defeated Caroline Yodice and Isabella Schulz, 8-0, at No. 1 doubles, while Tatjana Stoll and Diana Stomlega defeated Yuriko Ono and Nelli Lius, 8-2, at No. 2 doubles. Alice Patch and Tamri Chalaganidze downed Ivanka Mocic and Julia Suzuki, 8-2, at No. 3 doubles.
The Pirates then swept all six singles matches from the Bearcats, beginning with No. 5-ranked Lutzeier's 6-2, 6-1 win over Mocic at No. 1 singles. No. 17-ranked Stoll defeated Lius, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 3 singles, while Patch downed Yodice, 6-1, 6-0, at No. 4 singles. No. 22-ranked Stomlega blanked Suzuki, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 5 singles and Chalaganidze shut out Schulz, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 6 singles. Boixader Roca used a 10-point third-set tiebreaker to defeat Ono, 6-4, 3-6, (10-7) to finish off the singles sweep.
