FLORENCE, S.C. - Armstrong State University junior Lena Lutzeier has been named the Peach Belt Conference's Women's Tennis Player of the Year for a second straight season, highlighting the Pirates' honors at the league's annual awards banquet on Thursday evening.
Three Pirates earned All-PBC singles honors with one duo earning All-PBC doubles honors in addition to Lutzeier's Player of the Year accolade. The second-seeded Pirates open up action at the PBC Tournament on Friday morning, taking on seventh-seeded Georgia College at 9:00 a.m. at the Dr. Eddie Floyd Tennis Center in Florence, S.C.
Lutzeier finished her third straight season going unbeaten in Peach Belt competition in 2017. A junior from Blaustein, Germany, she went 21-1 at No. 1 singles and was named the PBC Player of the Week four times. Ranked No. 5 in the nation, she collected eight singles wins over nationally-ranked opponents. In doubles, she and partner Diana Stomlega are ranked #3 in the nation with a 16-1 mark, all at No. 1 doubles with four wins over nationally-ranked teams.
She is the eighth player at Armstrong State to earn back-to-back Player of the Year honors and the league's Player of the Year is from the Pirates for the 21st time in school history.
Lutzeier also earned first-team All-Peach Belt singles honors, and with senior Diana Stomlega, earned first-team All-Peach Belt doubles honors for a second straight season. Stomlega was honored as a second-team All-Peach Belt singles honoree, going 10-1 in Peach Belt play and 15-4 overall this Spring, earning a No. 22 national singles ranking.
Finally, freshman Paula Boixader Roca earned first-team All-Peach Belt singles honors in her debut season as a Pirate, going 9-1 in the league in singles and 13-6 overall this Spring.
