No. 16 Pirates Knock Off Florida Southern, 3-1, For 21st Straight Win

LAKELAND, Fla. - The No. 16-ranked Armstrong Atlantic State University volleyball team stretched its unbeaten 2011 start to 21-0 with a 3-1 win at Florida Southern on Monday afternoon at the FSC Wellness Center in Lakeland, Fla. Set scores were: 16-25, 25-22, 25-21, 25-23.
The win by the Pirates was the first for Armstrong over Florida Southern (10-7) since 2003, and it was only the second time that the Pirates have won in Lakeland over the Mocs all-time.
Playing in its fifth match in just six days, Armstrong started off the match slowly, hitting just .105 in the first-set loss to the Mocs. The Pirates jumped out to a 23-18 lead in the second set and used a service ace from junior Ashley Seal on set point to even the match up at 1-1.
Two blocks by reigning PBC Player of the Week Leia Pittman helped the Pirates score five of the last seven points of the third set for a 25-21 win, then Armstrong finally clinched the match on its fourth match point in the fourth set when Morgan Kosterlitz' attack error gave the Pirates a 25-23 win.
Junior Amanda Jones led the Pirates offensively with 15 kills, while sophomore Jessica Santaniello added 13 kills and 11 digs. Seal notched 39 assists and Pittman hit .429 with five blocks, while senior Stacey Davis collected a match-high 23 digs.
"We did a great job of battling and finding ways to score points," Armstrong head coach Will Condon said. "Florida Southern played well, and their defense was exceptional. We did a good job of winning long rallies and making them work hard. Stacey [Davis] played great and set the tempo for our defense, and our outsides did a good job of scoring."
Florida Southern placed five players in double digit kills, led by Kate Stromberg's 17 kills. Anne Pietkiewics added 13 kills, while Lauren Huber chipped in 11. Ali Skayhan notched 44 assists and Anna Niebuhr added 23 digs.
The Pirates return to action on Saturday, October 15, hosting Tusculum in a 1:00 p.m. match at the ARC.
